CDC Recommends Getting a Flu Shot Now—No, It’s Not Too Late!

Because of a spike in flu activity in the United States in recent weeks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has renewed its recommendation to get vaccinated against the flu. The flu vaccine is available on a walk-in basis to Fulton County residents at all eight health centers of the Fulton County Board of Health (FCBOH). The cost is $25 per vaccination. We accept cash and credit card payments as well as Medicaid and Medicare. However, we do not accept payment through private insurers, at this time.

Here is a list of health centers of the Fulton County Board of Health:

  • Adamsville Regional Health Center, 3700 Martin Luther King Jr. Dr., SW, Atlanta, GA 30331.
  • Center for Health & Rehabilitation, 265 Boulevard, NE, Atlanta, GA 30312.
  • College Park Regional Health Center, 1920 John Wesley Ave, College Park, GA 30337
  • Neighborhood Union Health Center, 186 Sunset Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30314.
  • North Fulton Regional Health Center, 3155 Royal Drive, Suite 125, Alpharetta, GA 30022.
  • North Fulton Service Center Health Center, 7741 Roswell Rd., Sandy Springs, GA 30350.
  • Oak Hill Child, Adolescent and Family Center, 2805 Metropolitan Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30315

Clinic hours vary by location. For information, visit our website: www.fultoncountyga.gov/dhw-home or call the FCBOH Main Number: 404-613-1205

Here’s what the CDC lists as “new” for this season:

  • Nasal spray vaccine is NOT recommended. Only injectable flu shots should be taken in the standard dose for most people ages 6-months and older.
  • The high-dose shot made with an adjuvant are recommended for people 65 or older.    (An adjuvant is an ingredient added to a vaccine to create a stronger immune response to vaccination.)
  • Pregnant women may receive any licensed, recommended, and age-appropriate flu vaccine.
  • Recommendations for people who are allergic to eggs—and therefore egg-grown reference virus and egg-based technology vaccines—remain the same as last season. While they “can get any licensed flu vaccine that is otherwise appropriate for their age and health, the vaccine should be given in a medical setting and be supervised by a health care provider who is able to recognize and manage severe allergic conditions.”

The CDC says flu activity most commonly peaks in the United States between December and February, although the duration and severity varies from season to season.    There’s more news about this year’s flu season on the CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/flu-season-2017-2018.htm
