Flu Vaccinations Available at Fulton County Health Centers | Print |

Flu season is around the corner.  Fulton County Health Services encourages everyone to get vaccinated, especially children.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that getting vaccinated is the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine protects against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season.  The Fulton Department of Health and Wellness is providing flu shots at seven centers from 8:30 am until 4:00 pm.

Fulton County Health Services to Conduct Barrier Sprayings to Increase West Nile Virus Prevention Efforts | Print |

First Barrier Spraying will begin at Wolf Creek Amphitheater as a precaution to protect Concert Attendees for the Labor Day Weekend Concert

Fulton County Health Services will begin barrier spraying areas identified as sites where mosquitoes tested positive as carriers of the West Nile Virus. In preparation for the concert at Wolf Creek Amphitheater being held on Saturday, September 1, 2012, Health Services will barrier spray the venue in order to best protect citizens and visitors attending the concert. The spraying will have no adverse effect on the health of concert goers, residents or businesses located in the surrounding area.

2012 National Black Health Awards Banquet  

— Black Doctors are important to the history of our country and vital to the progression of our culture. Atlanta has a very rich medical community and some of the very best African American physicians practice here. It is the mission of the Black Health Medical Research Foundation, a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization to locate these outstanding doctors that have made significant contributions to medicine, research and have made an impression on their respective communities. In doing so, Black Health is hosting the 2012 National Black Health Awards Banquet honoring 25 of Atlanta’s most influential African American Doctors on September 22, 2012 at the Downtown Atlanta Marriott Marquis. The VIP reception will commence at 5:00 p.m. followed by the red carpet black- tie awards banquet at 7:00 p.m.

 

"African American Doctors are extremely talented and have contributed immensely to revolutionizing medicine and technology throughout the world" said Dr. Ken Taylor, Medical Director of the National Black Women’s Health and Beauty Conference. A short list consists of key researchers, surgeons and inventors such as Dr. Charles Drew, who reformed the understanding of blood plasma – leading to the invention of blood banks; Dr. Patricia Bath, a noted Ophthalmologist and famous black inventor of the Laserphaco Probe and procedure in the removal of cataracts; Dr. Ben Carson, a neurosurgeon who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the U.S. by President George W. Bush in 2008. In 1987, Carson made medical history by being the first in the world to successfully separate a pair of Siamese twins joined at the head and; Dr. Vincent Michael Bivins, who is highly regarded for his work in Robotic Prostate Cancer Surgery and the list goes on.
