Because of a spike in flu activity in the United States in recent weeks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has renewed its recommendation to get vaccinated against the flu.  Here’s what the CDC lists as “new” for this season:

  • Nasal spray vaccine is NOT recommended.  Only injectable flu shots should be taken in the standard dose for most people ages 6-months and older.
  • The high-dose shot made with an adjuvant are recommended for people 65 or older. (An adjuvant is an ingredient added to a vaccine to create a stronger immune response to vaccination.)
  • Pregnant women may receive any licensed, recommended, and age-appropriate flu vaccine.
  • Recommendations for people who are allergic to eggs—and therefore egg-grown reference virus and egg-based technology vaccines—remain the same as last season.  While they  “can get any licensed flu vaccine that is otherwise appropriate for their age and health, the vaccine should be given in a medical setting and be supervised by a health care provider who is able to recognize and manage severe allergic conditions.”

The CDC says flu activity most commonly peaks in the United States between December and February, although the duration and severity varies from season to season.  There’s more news about this year’s flu season on the CDC website:   https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/flu-season-2017-2018.htm.
