140,000 seniors living in Fulton County can benefit from the theme of “Engage at Every Age”

Throughout the year, Fulton County promotes physical activities, wellness and social connections among seniors through its 4 senior multipurpose facilities and 15 neighborhood senior centers.   However, as Older Americans Month (OAM) kicked off today, May 1, 2018, the Department of Senior Services will highlight ongoing efforts to Keep Seniors engaged to help ensure a strong, positive and connected quality of life.

The theme of “Engage at Every Age can benefit 140,000 seniors living in Fulton County who can take advantage of the services offered through the Department of Senior Services.   Seniors in need of services, their families, and caregivers can visit multipurpose facilities, and neighborhood senior centers to find out how seniors can continue to live independently, avoid isolation, and meet their basic needs.

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners will honor seniors in Fulton and across the nation with a proclamation Wednesday, May 2, 2018 during their meeting at the Fulton County Government Center beginning at 10:00 a.m.

A major highlight of the month will include a Senior Summit that will be held simultaneously at all four senior multipurpose facilities Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.   Summit discussion topics include

  • Transportation
  • Housing
  • Food security (hunger)
  • Health/wellness

Seniors who participate will have the opportunity to discuss their concerns and needs now and in the future.

Other OAM offerings during May include special presentations of fitness, education and information that are available throughout the year for seniors.   For those seniors who want to take a first-hand look, during the month, the multipurpose facilities will offer special classes that include aquatics, exercise and fitness.   Additionally, seniors who visit the centers will enjoy entertainment, fashion shows, art exhibits, gardening demonstrations and other activities designed to promote fellowship and social connections.

Older Americans Month Calendar

For 55 years, OAM has been observed to recognize older Americans and their contributions to their communities. Led by the Administration for Community Living’s Administration on Aging, every May offers opportunities to hear from, support, and celebrate our nation’s elders. This year’s OAM theme, “Engage at Every Age,” emphasizes the importance of being active and involved at any age.

Seniors can show how they’re “Engaged” by tweeting their activities using the hashtag #FulcoOAM18.
