The Harriett G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility Presents Senior University Day 2009 |
|
The Harriett G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility and Strategies Task Force for Healthier Communities are hosting the 2009 Senior University Day at the Harriett G. Darnell Multipurpose Facility in Southwest Atlanta.
This year’s program is being held on Thursday, May 14th in conjunction with May as National Older Americans Month. The theme is “What is Really Making You Sick?” It is a community conversation on the environmental and societal conditions that cause people in certain areas to experience poorer health than others. Closing remarks will be given by Dr. Camara Jones of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Dr. Jones is an internationally renowned expert in the field of what’s called the “social determinants of health.”
The conversation will also include an introduction to and explanation of Fulton County’s response to disparities in citizens’ health outcomes—Common Ground. Common Ground is a county-wide initiative aimed at improving the quality of primary health care by bringing it and other services directly to communities. Representatives from the Fulton County Health and Human Services Department will be on hand to answer questions and direct those in attendance to appropriate services.
The topic of health disparities was selected by the Strategies Task Force for a Healthier Community, consisting of seniors who have taken the lead in putting this important program together. We especially want to invite seniors to attend; however, Senior University Day is open to everyone. For more information, please contact the Harriett G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility at 404-699-8580. |
