As a young woman, the District Attorney experienced a life-changing tragedy when she lost her aunt, Brenda Baham, to domestic violence at the hands of Ms. Baham's husband. Witnessing the horrific aftermath of this crime had a profound impact on her, solidifying her unwavering commitment to seeking justice.
Ms. Baham’s tragic murder became the catalyst for the District Attorney’s decision to pursue a career as a prosecutor, fueling her lifelong dedication to advocating for victims and their families. In honor of Ms. Baham’s legacy, she established a specialized Domestic Violence Division, comprised of experienced attorneys, investigators, victim advocates, and legal assistants, all committed to safeguarding the most vulnerable members of our community.
The Domestic Violence Division
The Domestic Violence Division handles cases involving intimate partner and family violence, elder abuse, and animal cruelty with both determination and expertise. Recognizing the critical connections between these issues, the members of this division are unwavering in their pursuit of justice for victims. Currently, the division is structured into two specialized units:
Domestic Violence Unit
The Domestic Violence Unit is deeply committed to supporting victims and prosecuting offenders. Specializing in intimate partner and family violence, the unit handles some of the most serious cases, including homicides, kidnappings, sexual assaults, and aggravated assaults. With professionalism, compassion, and unwavering dedication, the team ensures that victims are treated with dignity and respect throughout the legal process, providing vital support during an incredibly challenging time.
The Domestic Violence Unit consistently provides training for police officers, equipping them with the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively respond to and investigate domestic violence cases. In addition, the unit collaborates with schools and participates in various community events, offering educational programs designed to raise awareness about the signs of domestic violence and the resources available for survivors. These initiatives aim to foster community awareness, empowering victims to recognize and address domestic violence while promoting safety and support.
Animal Cruelty & Elder Abuse (ACE) Unit
The ACE Unit is resolute in securing justice for vulnerable individuals who may lack the ability to defend themselves or report their mistreatment. This unit prosecutes cases of financial and physical abuse, along with neglect, affecting individuals over the age of 65 who are targeted because of their age. Recognizing that elder abuse is significantly underreported, we prioritize community engagement, education, and prevention initiatives. Through comprehensive outreach efforts, we empower seniors with the knowledge needed to protect themselves and encourage the reporting of abuse.
Additionally, the ACE Unit prosecutes felony-level animal cruelty cases, including physical abuse, extreme neglect, torture, and animal fighting. We understand the strong connection between animal cruelty and violence against humans, as well as the essential role that animals play in people's lives. By addressing these heinous crimes, we are actively working to create a safer and more compassionate community.
Through these dedicated units, the District Attorney’s Office remains unwavering in its mission to protect victims, prevent violence, and seek justice for those who need it most.
