The Fulton County Board of Commissioners will soon set a rate for public use of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations installed at publicly accessible County buildings. In anticipation of that decision, two public hearings will be held to discuss the proposed rate.
The proposed rate is 25 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of charging time, for up to two consecutive hours.
Using a charger for longer than two hours would add a $2-an-hour overstay charge to the base rate. The proposed maximum total cost is $50. Payment can be made with a credit/debit card or through a downloadable phone app; cash will not be accepted.
At first the fees will only apply to the four charging stations recently installed at the Metropolitan Library branch, 1332 Metropolitan Parkway. Three of those EV chargers have dual ports while one, at an ADA-accessible space, has one. That allows a total of seven vehicles to charge at the same time.
The CT 4000 Level 2 Commercial Charging Stations, made by California-based ChargePoint, have J1772 connectors, the North American standard. Depending on the vehicle, Level 2 chargers can charge an EV from empty to 80% in four to 10 hours, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The chargers at the Metropolitan Library are part of a broader initiative to install EV chargers at all County buildings where they’re feasible, as directed by a 2022 resolution passed by the Board of Commissioners. Two more chargers are expected to be installed later this year at Fulton County Animal Services, 1251 Fulton Industrial Blvd. NW.
The public hearings will take place from:
• 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 2, at Sandy Springs Library, Room A, 395 Mount Vernon Hwy NE, Atlanta; and
• 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Metropolitan Library, Children’s Program Room, 1332 Metropolitan Parkway SW, Atlanta.
