Happening in Fulton: Fulton County Public Works Water Quality Update
The Public Works department explains recent changes in drinking water that residents have been reporting. Hear more from Water Quality Manager Cynthia Dang. I've had calls about taste and odor complaints around the distribution. So if you would like to know what's going on, we're here at the Tow Lowe facility to let you know. Every year Lake Lanier has a turnover. It's a seasonal turnover. It happens when when the surface of the water becomes more dense than the lower. Then it sinks and it all mixes. This happens a little bit in the spring and a lot in the fall. The top water sinks with the bottom water and that brings up compounds from the bottom and then those flow down the Chattahoochee. Then they're taken by different municipalities for drinking water purposes. It's totally safe to drink, but if we cannot get it completely out of solution it does cause a funny taste and a funny smell in the water. We usually are very capable of getting out of solution, and in past years people have not noticed it. However, recently it has come down from Lake Lanier in high concentrations, and we are able to remove a certain amount from the water but not all of it.
