Fulton County Commissioner Bob Ellis to Host Men's Health Tailgate
Your Health is the real MVP. That’s the message from Fulton County District 2 Commissioner Bob Ellis, as he invites men across North Fulton to join him for the Men’s Health Tailgate on Thursday, August 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
During the Men’s Health Tailgate, Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute will provide FREE blood test prostate cancer screenings. Atlanta Falcons mascot Freddie Falcon will be onsite from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to greet participants. The event will take place at Fulton County’s Health & Human Services – North facility, 4700 North Point Parkway, Alpharetta, GA 30022.
“Last year, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer,” said Commissioner Ellis. “Because I caught it early, I was able to work with my doctors to develop a winning game plan that worked for me.”
He added, “Lots of guys won’t see a doctor unless we absolutely must. Thanks to our partnership with the Winship Cancer Institute, our Men’s Health Tailgate event will make it free, easy and convenient for men to get a prostate cancer screening. A few minutes can save a life.”
Every 90 seconds a man in the U.S. learns that he has prostate cancer. In Georgia, an estimated 6,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed this year, with more than 700 deaths. Screenings and early diagnosis improve quality of life and chances for survival.
In addition to the prostate cancer screenings, Fulton County providers will connect men with a variety of resources to improve their health. The Fulton County Board of Health will offer a Men’s Health Playbook and free screenings, while the Fulton County Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities will offer a “Time Out for Mental Health.” In addition, the Fulton County Department of Senior Services will offer “Nutrition for Champions” with a registered dietician.
Around the nation, men face unique barriers to health care access, frequently resulting in worse health outcomes, with a life expectancy 6 years lower than women. Overall, men are half as likely as women to seek preventative care and screenings.
