Fulton County Begins Monitoring Wastewater for Coronavirus and Monkeypox

July 25, 2022
Monitoring of wastewater is used for early detection of COVID-19 and other viruses within a community.

Fulton County Chairman Robb Pitts and County Manager Dick Anderson will join the Public Works Department to collect wastewater samples at one of Fulton County’s Wastewater Treatment Plants. Public Works officials are working with Emory University to test the wastewater for signs of the COVID-19 and Monkey Pox viruses in the untreated wastewater flow. Through regular testing of the wastewater, the County and Emory University can measure the amount of the viruses and see whether the levels are increasing or decreasing within the area served by the treatment plant. This can be an early warning sign of increasing cases within a community.
