Fulton County Recruits Volunteers for its AmeriCorps Senior Companion Program

September 23, 2024
This volunteer support will help senior residents continue to live safe, active, healthy, and productive lives.

The Fulton County Department of Senior Services, in collaboration with AmeriCorps Funding, is once again seeking volunteers age 55 and older who may be eligible for its AmeriCorps Senior Companion Program.

Through the AmeriCorps Senior Companion Program, AmeriCorps Volunteers will serve as a friend or companion to Fulton County senior residents age 55-years-old and above to ensure they can live in their own homes for as long as possible. AmeriCorps Volunteers keep seniors independent longer by improving social connection, reducing isolation, and providing respite to family caregivers by aiding seniors with daily living tasks. Keeping this in mind, volunteer schedules are determined based on mutual availability and need.

In order to become a Volunteer, applicants will be required to complete a background check, fingerprinting, and training orientation. Once all requirements are successfully met, AmeriCorps Volunteers are eligible to receive the following benefits:

  • $4 per hour stipend, based on income eligibility. Income eligibility is 200% income poverty level.
  • Transportation reimbursement and Marta cards to support volunteer travel.
  • Ongoing volunteer recognition to further incentivize participation.
  • Peer support and engagement with other seniors while enjoying healthy, social activities of mutual interest.

Fulton County Senior Services will host two virtual information sessions on Tuesday, October 1 and Monday, October 14. Participants will receive a comprehensive overview of the AmeriCorps Senior Companion program and have the opportunity to ask additional questions.

Each year, the agency invests more than $800 million in grants for local nonprofit, community, tribal, and state organizations; places more than 250,000 AmeriCorps members and AmeriCorps Volunteers in intensive service roles; and empowers millions more to serve as long-term, short-term, or one-time volunteers.
